Um…Is Nitro Addicting?
A few years ago I attended one of the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Associations [CMDRA] sanctioned Drag Races held at the North Central Raceway racetrack in Prince George, BC, Canada. What I found there has kept me coming back time and time again to the sport I grew to love.
I was riding on the back of my Boyfriend's bike then, happy to be in the wind - the man that I love firmly at the controls. Little did I know what fate was to befall me - if I knew then what I know now would I still have made the choice to stay, to watch, to partake in the thrilling experience of a Day at the Motorcycle Drag Races? I don't know…
When I got to the Racetrack I was amazed at how many motorcyclists I saw. They came from all walks of life, rode in on all kinds of bikes [I must say that Harley Davidson was the premier brand of choice] and were there to mix and mingle. What a surprise to find that there were no attitudes or incidents - just good clean fun suitable for the whole Family!
After paying the entrance fee - which was a mere pittance for a fun-filled, action packed weekend of non-stop live entertainment, I was amazed to find that the Pits were open to the Public! There was "No Alcohol" for Safety reasons but with that understood I ventured forth into unknown territory. Walking around, talking to the Racers and their Pit Crews, seeing the bikes close up was a real first for me. The events I usually attended wanted to keep me behind bars… oh, sorry, wrong article…safely secured behind a protective barrier. The Stands had a chain link fence in front of it but again; I believe that was for the Safety of all Spectators.
I learned a lot about Drag Racing.
The CMDRA has many categories in which to Race - from Street Class to Top Fuel. Racers came from the USA to participate. Everyone put on a great show! There was some competition but it wasn't noticeable; all the men were Gentlemanly and the ladies [yes, even ladies like to race] were Ladylike too. I nearly forgot that people went there to win.
That fateful weekend, with the sun shining on me, surrounded by friends both new and old, my man by my side; I wish you all could have been there to experience it with me. The thrilling anticipation, adrenaline coursing thru my veins, the smell of burning rubber, Nitro in the air, it was all too potent of a cocktail for me - I was hit hard and I fell in deep. I then became a Motorcycle Drag Race Fan.
That was one of many CMDRA Drag Races I've attended over the years. Unfortunately for some, at this time, the Races seem to be held primarily in Western Canada. There must be a lot to that saying "Go West Young Man, Go West." Conveniently for me, and for those in the US, the Races are held in places like Mission, Ashcroft, & Prince George, BC - all within a day's ride and central - also in Edmonton, AB [which is great for those Racers coming from Eastern Canada.]
Oh, did I mention that my Boyfriend kicked me off of the back of his bike? Yeah, it was pretty unfortunate. Surely you have seen those T-Shirts. Well, my Boyfriend is now my Husband and I have since learned to ride. Today I am the proud owner of a Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic and I am known as "A Very Fast Girl" which leaves me asking the question, "Is Nitro Addicting?"
